9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings.

Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.


I have become a sign to many; you are my strong refuge.


Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?


Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s travelling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theatre together.


Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theatre.


As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’


If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.


Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.


known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed;


so that no-one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them.


Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?


Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.


Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.
