So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.


And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king's garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.


This same Hezeki´ah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezeki´ah prospered in all his works.


And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.


Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.


Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.


And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Hallo´hesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.


But the dung gate repaired Malchi´ah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Beth–hac´cerem; he built it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.


And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jesh´u-a, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall.


And next unto them repaired Melati´ah the Gib´e-onite, and Jadon the Meron´othite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river.


And next unto them repaired Rephai´ah the son of Hur, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem.


I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:


Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shilo´ah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remali´ah's son;


Then went Jeremiah unto Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.


Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Silo´am fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?


and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Silo´am, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.


Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer–sheba, with the land of Gil´e-ad, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.


(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
