But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zido´ni-ans, and Hittites;


And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.


All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.


and that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:


and if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.


On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;


and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.


Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?


But it came to pass, that when Sanbal´lat, and Tobi´ah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ash´dodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,


Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Per´izzite, and the Hivite, and the Jeb´usite.


Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?


When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Gir´gashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Per´izzites, and the Hivites, and the Jeb´usites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;


And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelt there about ten years.


And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebene´zer unto Ashdod.
