And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manas´seh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.


And the name of the second called he E´phra-im: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.


And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manas´seh and E´phra-im, which As´enath the daughter of Potiphe´rah priest of On bare unto him.


And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of E´phra-im, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from E´phra-im's head unto Manas´seh's head.


And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.


And Joseph saw E´phra-im's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manas´seh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.


and made him king over Gil´e-ad, and over the Ash´urites, and over Jezreel, and over E´phra-im, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.


And he took Geshur, and Aram, with the towns of Ja´ir, from them, with Kenath, and the towns thereof, even threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of Gil´e-ad.


Thus saith the Lord God; This shall be the border, whereby ye shall inherit the land according to the twelve tribes of Israel: Joseph shall have two portions.


And by the border of Naph´tali, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Manas´seh.


Of the sons of Manas´seh: of Machir, the family of the Ma´chirites: and Machir begat Gil´e-ad: of Gil´e-ad come the family of the Gil´e-adites.


Then came the daughters of Zelo´phehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gil´e-ad, the son of Machir, the son of Manas´seh, of the families of Manas´seh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.


And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manas´seh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.


but he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.


There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manas´seh by their families; for the children of Abi-e´zer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of As´ri-el, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemi´da: these were the male children of Manas´seh the son of Joseph by their families.


Now to the one half of the tribe of Manas´seh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,


Out of E´phra-im was there a root of them against Am´alek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zeb´ulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
