Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.


For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.


Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.


He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chalde´ans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.


And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnez´zar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.


For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnez´zar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.


then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elish´ama the scribe, and Delai´ah the son of Shemai´ah, and Elna´than the son of Achbor, and Gemari´ah the son of Shaphan, and Zedeki´ah the son of Hanani´ah, and all the princes.


Then Shephati´ah the son of Mattan, and Gedali´ah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemi´ah, and Pashur the son of Malchi´ah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,


Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.


Now when E´bed–mel´ech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;


They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.


Then Amazi´ah the priest of Beth–el sent to Jerobo´am king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.


All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Han´aneel unto the king's winepresses.


And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a king.


neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.


Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.


by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
