So Israel and Ab´salom pitched in the land of Gil´e-ad.


And say ye to Ama´sa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Jo´ab.


And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.


Then said the king to Ama´sa, Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be thou here present.


Then tidings came to Jo´ab: for Jo´ab had turned after Adoni´jah, though he turned not after Ab´salom. And Jo´ab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.


And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Ama´sa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.


Moreover thou knowest also what Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Ama´sa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.


And there fell some of Manas´seh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle; but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.


And Jesse begat his firstborn Eli´ab, and Abin´adab the second, and Shimma the third,
