But Ab´ishai the son of Zeru-i´ah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.


Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.


Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen.


And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.


Nevertheless for David's sake did the Lord his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:


Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah for David his servant's sake, as he promised him to give him always a light, and to his children.


And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahazi´ah his son reigned in his stead.


But Jehosh´abeath, the daughter of the king, took Jo´ash the son of Ahazi´ah, and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehosh´abeath, the daughter of king Jeho´ram, the wife of Jehoi´ada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahazi´ah,) hid him from Athali´ah, so that she slew him not.


And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David.


Now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.


The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.


Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.


and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;


to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
