and Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.


For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person; yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.


yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;


And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord,


And Jehosh´aphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.


Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.


My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.


For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.


He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;


Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.


wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.


We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.


Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.


My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?


I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.


Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.


Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.


And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoi´akim the son of Josi´ah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.


Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!


Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.


Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,


The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!


Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:


Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.


Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:


And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:


If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;


I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,


and Mizpeh, and Chephi´rah, and Mozah,


And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Ba´alim.


And the children of Israel said unto the Lord, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.


And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.


(And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)


Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.


And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chu´shan–rishatha´im king of Mesopota´mi-a into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chu´shan–rishatha´im.


And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.


And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;


And they cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Ba´alim and Ash´toreth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.


And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
