And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben–ha´dad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.


But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben–ha´dad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.


Gebal, and Ammon, and Am´alek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;


Ye stand this day all of you before the Lord your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,


the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasha´ron, one;


from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Me-a´rah that is beside the Sido´nians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:


and Janum, and Beth–tap´pu-ah, and Aphe´kah,


Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages.


and ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.


Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel.


And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.


And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.


And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebene´zer unto Ashdod.


Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebene´zer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
