And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.


the sons of Le´ah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Is´sachar, and Zeb´ulun:


And now thy two sons, E´phra-im and Manas´seh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt, before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.


the blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.


And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.


Howbeit the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:


Gil´e-ad is mine; Manas´seh is mine; E´phra-im also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

But thou, Bethlehem Eph´ratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.


And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Ammin´adab shall be captain of the children of Judah.


And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Ammin´adab, of the tribe of Judah:


And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.


For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.


but he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.


His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of E´phra-im, and they are the thousands of Manas´seh.


For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.


Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephun´neh the Ken´ezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Ka´desh–barne´a.


And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.


And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.


And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth´lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.


Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.


And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
