The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and people say, ‘Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine. He’s a friend of tax collectors and other sinners.’ But wisdom is shown to be right by what it does.”


If you love only those who love you, why should you get a reward for that? Even the tax collectors do that.


Jesus ate dinner at Matthew’s house. Many tax collectors and others with bad reputations came and ate with him and his followers.


When some teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with such bad people, they asked his followers, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”


Everyone saw this. They began to complain, “Look at the kind of man Jesus is staying with. Zacchaeus is a sinner!”


But the Pharisees and those who taught the law for the Pharisees began to complain to the followers of Jesus, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and other sinners?”


They said, “You went into the homes of people who are not Jews and are not circumcised, and you even ate with them!”


We are Jews by birth. We were not born “sinners,” as we call those who are not Jews.


The high priest has his own weaknesses. So he is able to be gentle with those who do wrong out of ignorance.


Don’t accept those who come to you but do not bring this teaching. Don’t invite them into your house. Don’t welcome them in any way.
