If you love only those who love you, why should you get a reward for that? Even the tax collectors do that.


“The tax collector stood alone too. But when he prayed, he would not even look up to heaven. He felt very humble before God. He said, ‘O God, have mercy on me. I am a sinner!’


The people asked John, “What should we do?”


He told them, “Don’t take more taxes from people than you have been ordered to collect.”


(When the people heard this, they all agreed that God’s teaching was good. Even the tax collectors agreed. These were the people who were baptized by John.


When the people heard this, they felt very, very sorry. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
