But the king protected Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth. Jonathan was Saul’s son, and David had made a promise in the Lord’s name to Jonathan. So the king did not let them hurt Mephibosheth.


“You must not use the name of the Lord your God to make empty promises. If you do, the Lord will not let you go unpunished.


“If a man makes a special promise to the Lord or makes a promise with an oath, he must not break his promise. He must do everything he said he would do.


When we come back to this land, you must tie in your window this red rope you are using to help us escape. You must bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your family into your house with you.


We are making this agreement with you. But if you tell anyone about what we are doing, we will be free from this agreement.”
