Now king Shlomo loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Par`oh, women of the Mo`avim, `Ammonim, Edom, Tzidonim, and Chitti;


Ezra the Kohen stood up, and said to them, You have trespassed, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Yisra'el.


All these had taken foreign wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.


and that we would not give our daughters to the peoples of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons;


and if the peoples of the land bring wares or any grain on the day of Shabbat to sell, that we would not buy of them on the Shabbat, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.


On that day they read in the book of Moshe in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an `Ammonite and a Mo'avite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,


and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.


Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?


But it happened that when Sanvallat, Toviyah, the Arabians, the `Ammonim, and the Ashdodi heard that the repairing of the walls of Yerushalayim went forward, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very angry;


Observe that which I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the Amori, the Kena`ani, the Chittite, the Perizzi, the Chivvi, and the Yevusi.


Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?


When the LORD your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Chittite, and the Girgashi, and the Amori, and the Kena`ani, and the Perizzi, and the Chivvi, and the Yevusi, seven nations greater and mightier than you;


They took them wives of the women of Mo'av; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Rut: and they lived there about ten years.


Now the Pelishtim had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Even-Ha`ezer to Ashdod.
