and they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshiped them, and served them: therefore has the LORD brought all this evil on them.


They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and [went] after the nations that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged those who they should not do like them.


but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, until there was no remedy.


Didn't your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? yet you bring more wrath on Yisra'el by profaning the Shabbat.


Streams of tears run down my eyes, because they don't observe your law.


They draw near who follow after wickedness. They are far from your law.


Salvation is far from the wicked, for they don't seek your statutes.


They didn't keep God's covenant, and refused to walk in his law.


Yet they tempted and rebelled against the El `Elyon, and didn't keep his testimonies;


You shall tell them, Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,


and the LORD has brought it, and done according as he spoke: because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come on you.


They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.


But since we left off burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.


Thus says the LORD of Armies, the God of Yisra'el: You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Yerushalayim, and on all the cities of Yehudah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells therein,


The incense that you burned in the cities of Yehudah, and in the streets of Yerushalayim, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, didn't the LORD remember them, and didn't it come into his mind?


because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, [and] to serve other gods, that they didn't know, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.


in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you are gone to sojourn; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?


Yerushalayim has grievously sinned; therefore she is become as an unclean thing; all who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yes, she sighs, and turns backward.


As it is written in the Torah of Moshe, all this evil is come on us: yet have we not entreated the favor of the LORD our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in your truth.


But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don't desire that you would have communion with demons.


What agreement has a temple of God with idols? For you are a temple of the living God. Even as God said, *I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people.*
