because that they have forsaken me, and have worshiped `Ashoret the goddess of the Tzidonim, Kemosh the god of Mo'av, and Milkom the god of the children of `Ammon; and they have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and [to keep] my statutes and my ordinances, as did David his father.


But the angel of the LORD said to Eliyahu the Tishbi, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Shomron, and tell them, Is it because there is no God in Yisra'el, that you go to inquire of Ba`al-Zevuv, the god of `Ekron?


Haven't you driven out the Kohanim of the LORD, the sons of Aharon, and the Levites, and made you Kohanim after the manner of the peoples of [other] lands? so that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, the same may be a Kohen of [those who are] no gods.


Thus they exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass.


Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.


But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.


and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.


Shall a man make to himself gods, which yet are no gods?


Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask you now among the nations, who has heard such things; the virgin of Yisra'el has done a very horrible thing.


thus says the LORD, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?


The Kohanim didn't say, Where is the LORD? and those who handle the law didn't know me: the rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Ba`al, and walked after things that do not profit.


How can I pardon you? your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes' houses.


that I may take the house of Yisra'el in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.


Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you are turbulent more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my ordinances, neither have done after the ordinances of the nations that are round about you;


Indeed all the nations may walk in the name of their gods; but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.


and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.


Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one.


However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.


They moved him to jealousy with strange [gods]. They provoked him to anger with abominations.


They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God. They have provoked me to anger with their vanities. I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.


You are happy, Yisra'el. Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, the sword of your excellency! Your enemies shall submit themselves to you. You shall tread on their high places.


knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,


She named the child Ikhavod, saying, The glory is departed from Yisra'el; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
