1 Bel bows down, Nevo 1 stoops; their idols are on the animals, and on the livestock: the things that you carried about are made a load, a burden to the weary [animal].

Will you trust him, because his strength is great? Or will you leave to him your labor?


For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal. Against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.


The idols shall utterly pass away.


In that day, men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats;


Behold, here comes a troop of men, horsemen in pairs.* He answered, *Fallen, fallen is Bavel; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken to the ground.


The burden of the animals of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, of the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches on the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to an unprofitable people.


Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations: they have no knowledge who carry the wood of their engraved image, and pray to a god that can't save.


They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it, and set it in its place, and it stands, from its place it shall not move: yes, one may cry to it, yet it can not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.


They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don't speak: they must be carried, because they can't go. Don't be afraid of them; for they can't do evil, neither is it in them to do good.*


Declare you among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and don't conceal: say, Bavel is taken, Bel is disappointed, Merodakh is dismayed; her images are disappointed, her idols are dismayed.


A drought is on her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of engraved images, and they are mad over idols.


I will execute judgment on Bel in Bavel, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more to him: yes, the wall of Bavel shall fall.


Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Bavel; and her whole land shall be confounded; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.


Therefore, behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will execute judgment on her engraved images; and through all her land the wounded shall groan.


Also their gods, with their molten images, [and] with their goodly vessels of silver and of gold, shall he carry captive into Egypt; and he shall refrain some years from the king of the north.


Nevukhadnetzar 1 answered them, Is it on purpose, Shadrakh, Meshakh, and `Aved-Nego, that you don't serve my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?


The LORD has commanded concerning you: *No more descendants will bear your name. Out of the house of your gods, will I cut off the engraved image and the molten image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.*


and Nevo 1, and Ba`al-Me`on, (their names being changed), and Sivmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built.


For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.


When they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. They took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
