Ya`akov tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.


Shafan the scribe told the king, saying, Chilkiyah the Kohen has delivered me a book. Shafan read it before the king.


because your heart was tender, and you did humble yourself before the LORD, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants of it, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you, says the LORD.


It happened, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he tore his clothes.


My flesh trembles for fear of you. I am afraid of your judgments.


For all these things has my hand made, and [so] all these things came to be, says the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word.


Now it happened, when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said to Barukh, We will surely tell the king of all these words.


They were not afraid, nor tore their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants who heard all these words.


Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the LORD, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.


Thus says the LORD: *For three transgressions of Yehudah, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have rejected the LORD's law, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have led them astray, after which their fathers walked;


Yehoshua tore his clothes, and fell to the dirt on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Yisra'el; and they put dust on their heads.
