It happened, when the king had heard the words of the scroll of the Torah, that he tore his clothes.


Shafan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the LORD.


Shafan the scribe told the king, saying, Chilkiyah the Kohen has delivered me a book. Shafan read therein before the king.


On that day they read in the book of Moshe in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an `Ammonite and a Mo'avite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,


Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the scroll of the Torah of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.


For all these things has my hand made, and [so] all these things came to be, says the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word.


Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at his word: Your brothers who hate you, who cast you out for my name's sake, have said, Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy; but it is those who shall be disappointed.


Say you to the king and to the queen mother, Humble yourselves, sit down; for your headdresses are come down, even the crown of your glory.

So the king sent Yehudi to get the scroll; and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. Yehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood beside the king.


therefore go you, and read in the scroll, which you have written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house on the fast day; and also you shall read them in the ears of all Yehudah who come out of their cities.
