Joshua 10:1 - Good News Translation (US Version)

1 Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured and totally destroyed Ai and had killed its king, just as he had done to Jericho and its king. He also heard that the people of Gibeon had made peace with the Israelites and were living among them.

And Melchizedek, who was king of Salem and also a priest of the Most High God, brought bread and wine to Abram,


This Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of the Most High God. As Abraham was coming back from the battle in which he defeated the four kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him,


So Adonizedek sent the following message to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and to King Debir of Eglon:


With their swords they killed everyone in the city, men and women, young and old. They also killed the cattle, sheep, and donkeys.


You are to do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king, but this time you may keep its goods and livestock for yourselves. Prepare to attack the city by surprise from the rear.”


When Joshua and his men saw that the others had taken the city and that it was on fire, they turned around and began killing the men of Ai.


But the people of Gibeon, who were Hivites, heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
