At the same time Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus: “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?”


I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;


do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.’”

Then I said, ‘What are these, my lord?’ The angel who talked with me said to me, ‘I will show you what they are.’


Then I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.”


For thus says the Lord of hosts: “As I purposed to bring disaster to you when your fathers provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts,
