while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.”


Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.”


When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread,


You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.


But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil.


Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;


let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.


Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything.


Who is like the wise? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.


Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.


For behold, the Lord God of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water;


“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,


They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall languish no more.


“Son of man, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it and break its supply of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast,


Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, behold, I will break the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.


when I send against you the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon you and break your supply of bread.


When I break your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven and shall dole out your bread again by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.


Then Ephraim shall become like a mighty warrior, and their hearts shall be glad as with wine. Their children shall see it and be glad; their hearts shall rejoice in the Lord.


And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.


You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.


And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,


You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives shall drop off.


And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.


You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”


But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.


And on the fourth day they arose early in the morning, and he prepared to go, but the girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and after that you may go.”


But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’


But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’
