But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”


Moreover, he made high places in the hill country of Judah and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom and made Judah go astray.


“If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares the Lord.


She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore.


“But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your renown and lavished your whorings on any passerby; your beauty became his.


You multiplied your whoring also with the trading land of Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.


“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.


The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”


He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.


But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.


“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.


It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife.


A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.


For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.
