Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us.


“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.


There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.


The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.


Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: “Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.


You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings, or honored me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, or wearied you with frankincense.


Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’ or to a woman, ‘With what are you in labor?’”


There is no one who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.


But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.


“Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the Lord.


Have you not just now called to me, ‘My father, you are the friend of my youth—


With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.


The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command that their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me.


Her priests have done violence to my law and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.


Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”


My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.


Hear this, O priests! Pay attention, O house of Israel! Give ear, O house of the king! For the judgment is for you; for you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor.


Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.


Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.


“And now, O priests, this command is for you.


Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?


But you have turned aside from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts,


“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.


For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’


he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.


Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”


Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.


“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.


You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”


For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’


But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”


You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’”


Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.


“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?


“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),


and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’


Do you thus repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father, who created you, who made you and established you?


“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.


And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,
