I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.


As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—


He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.


Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.


From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.


Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,


And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.


And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.


And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.


And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.”


Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.


And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.


And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”


When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”


Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.


They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”


This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.


Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”


this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.


The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.
