And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.


Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven.


“Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”


And the Lord relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.


For behold, the Lord is coming out from his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth will disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain.


As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord.


It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”


Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”


It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds.


And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant?


The Lord relented concerning this: “It shall not be,” said the Lord.


You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life.


Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech and their men to entreat the favor of the Lord,


As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before the Lord, and they became holy. Thus they shall be a sign to the people of Israel.”


so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.


but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,


For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!”
