2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord.

For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the Lord; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.

But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.


“Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock?


What will you say when they set as head over you those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Will not pangs take hold of you like those of a woman in labor?


“I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”


O house of David! Thus says the Lord: “‘Execute justice in the morning, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of your evil deeds.’”


And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and his household.


The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and the abominations that you committed. Therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.


Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord, and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?”

Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the Lord.


So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered;


And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the Lord.


The best of them is like a brier, the most upright of them a thorn hedge. The day of your watchmen, of your punishment, has come; now their confusion is at hand.


“My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the Lord of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle.


For behold, I am raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for those being destroyed, or seek the young or heal the maimed or nourish the healthy, but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.


I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’


I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’


Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
