“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth”— let Israel now say—


Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.


And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.”


Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice;


Go out, O daughters of Zion, and look upon King Solomon, with the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, on the day of the gladness of his heart.


What is that coming up from the wilderness like columns of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the fragrant powders of a merchant?


“Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins.


And the Lord said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them.


and go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you.


The word of the Lord came to me, saying,


They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?’


Have you not just now called to me, ‘My father, you are the friend of my youth—


“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord.


And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.


yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant.


“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.


Yet she increased her whoring, remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt


They played the whore in Egypt; they played the whore in their youth; there their breasts were pressed and their virgin bosoms handled.


She did not give up her whoring that she had begun in Egypt; for in her youth men had lain with her and handled her virgin bosom and poured out their whoring lust upon her.


When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.


And there I will give her her vineyards and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth, as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.


For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more.


She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.’


Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law.


Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.


“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”


He who has ears to hear, let him hear.


Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”


For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”’


Yes, he loved his people, all his holy ones were in his hand; so they followed in your steps, receiving direction from you,


And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.


You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.


But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
