Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged. He gave them all into his hand.


In that day the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth;


And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.


Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.


They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.


eighty men arrived from Shechem and Shiloh and Samaria, with their beards shaved and their clothes torn, and their bodies gashed, bringing grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the Lord.


Baldness has come upon Gaza; Ashkelon has perished. O remnant of their valley, how long will you gash yourselves?


“For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. On all the hands are gashes, and around the waist is sackcloth.


“‘Cut off your hair and cast it away; raise a lamentation on the bare heights, for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.’


And they shall be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. And they shall not be gathered or buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground.


You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.


You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.


For behold, the Lord commands, and the great house shall be struck down into fragments, and the little house into bits.


And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,


“You are the sons of the Lord your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead.


And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.


Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains,
