In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.


For Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 from Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers.


Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?


These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed by wine, they stagger with strong drink, they reel in vision, they stumble in giving judgment.


Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them!


Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink,


for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”


But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him, and stirs up his enemies.


The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel;


and all the people will know, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:


whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding.


The pride of Israel testifies to his face; Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt; Judah also shall stumble with them.


Ephraim shall become a desolation in the day of punishment; among the tribes of Israel I make known what is sure.


In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s whoredom is there; Israel is defiled.


On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with mockers.


and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.


“But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy.’


they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.


“Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’


“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes!


“Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,


who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!


The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts: “I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds, and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
