For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter, for there was none left, bond or free, and there was none to help Israel.


Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria. And Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.


But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison.


So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, the spirit of Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, to this day.

who set out to go down to Egypt, without asking for my direction, to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

As one gathers silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into a furnace, to blow the fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath, and I will put you in and melt you.

When I please, I will discipline them, and nations shall be gathered against them when they are bound up for their double iniquity.


The Lord has an indictment against Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him according to his deeds.


For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land.
