There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.


They swore an oath to the Lord with a loud voice and with shouting and with trumpets and with horns.


“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”


But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.


All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.


“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying,


Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”


“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.


Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?


After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.”


And when this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.


I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.


And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.”
