When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim; it is beyond the Jordan.


“Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!


And the king lamented for Abner, saying, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?


Jeremiah also uttered a lament for Josiah; and all the singing men and singing women have spoken of Josiah in their laments to this day. They made these a rule in Israel; behold, they are written in the Laments.


I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning.


This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”
