In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.


And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.


Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight.


Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.


I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.


A man is commended according to his good sense, but one of twisted mind is despised.


And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.


for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.


Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,


As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,


So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”


Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually.


And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.


And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him.


Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.


Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.”


Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.”
