Revelation 11:8 - Easy To Read Version

8 The bodies of the two witnesses will lie in the street of the great city. This city is named Sodom {\cf2\super [84]} and Egypt. These names for the city have a special meaning. This is the city where the Lord was killed.

The Lord knew that the people of Sodom were very evil sinners.


At the same time, the Lord began to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord caused fire and burning sulfur to fall out of the sky from the Lord.


“I am the Lord [123] your God. I led you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves. {So you must obey these commands:}


Then the Lord said, “I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt. And I have heard their cries when the Egyptians hurt them. I know about their pain.


The faces of the people show that they are guilty of doing wrong. And they are proud of their sin. They are like the people of Sodom {\cf2\super [31]} —they don’t care who sees their sin. It will be very bad for them. They have brought much trouble to themselves.


Now I have seen the prophets of Judah\par do those terrible things in Jerusalem.\par These prophets do the sin of adultery. {\cf2\super [187]} \par They listened to lies—and they obeyed\par those false teachings.\par They encourage wicked people\par to continue doing evil things.\par So the people did not stop sinning.\par They are like the people of Sodom {\cf2\super [188]} .\par Now Jerusalem is like Gomorrah {\cf2\super [189]} to me.”\par


Those men brought Uriah from Egypt. Then those men took Uriah to King Jehoiakim. Jehoiakim ordered Uriah to be killed with a sword. Uriah’s body was thrown into the burial place where poor people are buried.


Your older sister was Samaria. She lived to the north of you with her daughters (towns). And your younger sister was Sodom. {\cf2\super [130]} She lived to the south of you with her daughters (towns).


\{God said,\} “Your sister Sodom and her daughters were proud, they had too much to eat, and too much time on their hands. And they did not help poor, helpless people.


Again and again Oholibah was unfaithful to me. And then she remembered the love affair she had as a young girl in Egypt.


And I will stop your dreams about your love affair with Egypt. You will never again look for them. You will never remember Egypt again!’”


They became prostitutes {\cf2\super [179]} in Egypt while they were still young girls. In Egypt, they first made love and let men touch their nipples and hold their young breasts.


Besides that, she never stopped her love affair with Egypt. Egypt made love to her when she was a young girl. Egypt was the first lover to touch her young breasts. Egypt poured his untrue love on her.


Then the Lord my Master said to me, “Son of man, {\cf2\super [291]} these bones are like the whole family of Israel. The people of Israel say, ‘Our bones have dried up, {\cf2\super [292]} our hope is gone. We have been completely destroyed!’


“I destroyed you like I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [55]} And those cities were completely destroyed. You were like a burnt stick pulled from a fire. But still you didn’t come back to me \{for help\}.” The Lord said those things.


I tell you the truth. On the judgment day it will be worse for that town than for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [127]}


Saul fell to the ground. He heard a voice saying to him: “Saul, Saul! Why are you doing these bad things to me?”


So Jesus also suffered outside the city. Jesus died to make his people holy {\cf2\super [177]} with his own blood (death).


And God also punished the \{evil\} cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [7]} God burned those cities until there was nothing left but ashes. God made those cities be an example to show what will happen to people who are against God.


At that same time there was a great earthquake. One tenth of the city was destroyed. And 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake. The people that did not die were very afraid. They gave glory to the God of heaven.


People from every race of people, tribe, language, and nation will look at the bodies of the two witnesses for three and a half days. The people will refuse to bury them.


The grapes were squeezed in the winepress outside the city. Blood flowed out of the winepress. It rose as high as the heads of the horses for a distance of 200 miles.


Then the second angel followed the first angel and said, “She is destroyed! The great city of Babylon is destroyed! She (Babylon) made all the nations drink the wine of her adultery {\cf2\super [101]} and of God’s anger.”


The great city split into three parts. The cities of the nations were destroyed. And God did not forget \{to punish\} Babylon the Great. He gave that city the cup filled with the wine of his terrible anger.


One of the seven angels came and spoke to me. This was one of the angels that had the seven bowls. The angel said, “Come, and I will show you the punishment that will be given to the famous prostitute. {\cf2\super [125]} She is the one sitting over many waters.


The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”


She had a title written on her forehead. This title has a hidden meaning. This is what was written:


The rulers will be afraid of her suffering and stand far away. The rulers will say:


They saw the smoke from her burning. They said loudly, ‘There was never a city like this great city!’


The angel shouted with a powerful voice:


Then a powerful angel picked up a large rock. This rock was as big as a large millstone. {\cf2\super [137]} The angel threw the rock into the sea and said:


She (Babylon) is guilty\par of the blood (death) of the prophets, {\cf2\super [142]} \par of God’s holy people, {\cf2\super [143]} and of all the people who have been killed on earth.”\par
