We have this hope, so we are very brave.


I feel very sure of you. I am very proud of you. You give me much courage. And in all of our troubles I have great joy.


So I ask you not to become discouraged \{and lose hope\} because of the sufferings I am having for you. My sufferings bring honor to you.


The thing I want and hope for is that I will not fail Christ in anything. I hope that I will have the courage now, like always, to show the greatness of Christ in my life here on earth. I want to do that if I die or if I live.


And I know that I am right to think like this about all of you. I am sure because I have you in my heart—I feel very close to you. I feel close to you because all of you share in God’s grace (kindness) with me. You share in God’s grace with me while I am in prison, while I am defending the Good News, {\cf2\super [5]} and while I am proving the truth of the Good News.


My dear brothers and sisters, I love you and want to see you. You bring me joy and make me proud of you. Continue following the Lord like I have told you.


Pray that I can make this truth clear to people. That is what I must do.


Tychicus is my dear brother in Christ. He is a faithful helper and he serves the Lord with me. He will tell you all the things that are happening to me.


Before we came to you, we suffered in Philippi. People there said bad things against us. You know all about that. And when we came to you, many people were against us. But our God helped us to be brave. He helped us to tell you his Good News. {\cf2\super [4]}


And I am suffering because I tell that Good News. I am even bound with chains like a person who has really done wrong. But God’s teaching is not bound.
