The soldiers sat there and continued watching Jesus.


and said, “You said you could destroy the temple and build it again in three days. So save yourself! Come down from that cross, if you are really the Son of God!”


He trusted God. So let God save him now, if God really wants him. He himself said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”


When Jesus died, the curtain in the temple {\cf2\super [434]} was torn into two pieces. The tear started at the top and tore all the way to the bottom. Also, the earth shook and rocks were broken.


The devil came to Jesus to tempt him. The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread.”


Jesus went to the city of Capernaum. When Jesus entered the city, an army officer {\cf2\super [90]} came to him and begged for help.


The army officer {\cf2\super [232]} that was standing there before the cross saw what happened when Jesus died. The officer said, “This man really was the Son of God!”


They all said, “Then are you the Son of God?” Jesus said to them, “Yes, you are right when you say that I am.”


The Jewish leaders answered, “We have a law that says he must die, because he said that he is the Son of God.”


In the city of Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius. He was an army officer {\cf2\super [201]} in the “Italian” group \{of the Roman army\}.


When the people heard this, they felt very, very sorry. They asked Peter and the other apostles, {\cf2\super [41]} “Brothers, what should we do?”


Immediately the commander went to the place where the people were. He brought some army officers {\cf2\super [431]} and soldiers with him. The people saw the commander and his soldiers. So they stopped beating Paul.


Then Paul called one of the army officers {\cf2\super [458]} and said to him, “Take this young man to the commander. He has a message for him.”


Then the commander called two army officers. {\cf2\super [459]} He said to them, “I need some men to go to Caesarea. Get 200 soldiers ready. Also, get 70 soldiers on horses and 200 men to carry spears. Be ready to leave at nine o’clock tonight.


It was decided that we would sail for Italy. An army officer {\cf2\super [506]} named Julius guarded Paul and some other prisoners. Julius served in the emperor’s {\cf2\super [507]} special army.


But the army officer {\cf2\super [518]} (Julius) wanted to let Paul live. So he did not allow the soldiers to kill the prisoners. Julius told the people that could swim to jump into the water and swim to land.


At that same time there was a great earthquake. One tenth of the city was destroyed. And 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake. The people that did not die were very afraid. They gave glory to the God of heaven.
