These are the messages of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was the son of a man named Hilkiah. Jeremiah belonged to the family of priests that lived in the city of Anathoth. {\cf2\super [1]} That city is in the land that belongs to the family group of Benjamin.


\{The Lord said,\} “Look, I will send Elijah the prophet to you. He will come before that great and terrible time of judgment from the Lord.


So Herod said to his servants, “This man (Jesus) is really John the Baptizer. He must have risen from death. That is why he is able to do these miracles. {\cf2\super [196]} ”


Then Jesus said to his followers, “And who do you say I am?”


The followers asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah {\cf2\super [238]} must come {\cf2\super [239]} first \{before the Christ {\cf2\super [240]} comes\}?”


At that time John the Baptizer came and began telling people a message \{from God\}. This was in the desert area of Judea.


Other people said, “He is Elijah. {\cf2\super [70]} ”


The followers answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Other people say you are Elijah. {\cf2\super [98]} And other people say that you are one of the prophets. {\cf2\super [99]} ”


Other people said, “Elijah {\cf2\super [162]} has come to us.” And some other people said, “One of the prophets {\cf2\super [163]} from long ago has risen from death.”


The Jews asked John, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah {\cf2\super [11]} ?”


There was a large group of people there. Many of these people were talking secretly to each other about Jesus. Some people said, “He is a good man.” But other people said, “No, he fools the people.”


The Jewish leaders asked the man again, “This man (Jesus) healed you, and you can see. What do you say about him?”
