Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you seen my servant Job? There is no person on earth like Job. Job is a good and faithful man. He worships God and refuses to do evil things. He still is faithful, even though you asked me to let you destroy everything he has for no reason.”


Lord, when you are with the king,\par he is like a hot oven \{that burns up everything in it\}.\par His anger burns like a hot fire,\par and he destroys his enemies.\par


Those soldiers burned your Holy Place.\par That temple was built to honor your name.\par But they pulled it down to the ground.\par


The Lord has chosen a special day. On that day there will be riots and confusion. People will trample (walk on) each other in the Valley of Vision. {\cf2\super [214]} The city walls will be pulled down. The people in the valley will be shouting at the people in the city on the mountain.


It was the Lord All-Powerful.\par He decided to make them not important.\par

The vines will become dry. And the branches will break off. Women will use those branches for firewood.


I will make your holy rulers not holy. I will cause Jacob to be completely mine. {\cf2\super [390]} Bad things will happen to Israel.”


“I was angry at my people.\par Those people belong to me,\par but I was angry,\par so I made them not important.\par I gave them to you,\par and you punished them.\par But you showed no mercy to them.\par You made even the old people\par work hard.\par


I will make the people of Judah stumble and fall into one another. Fathers and sons will fall into one another.’” This message is from the Lord. “‘I will not feel sorry or have pity for them. I will not allow compassion to stop me from destroying the people of Judah.’”


“This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel says: ‘I said I would bring many disasters to Jerusalem and the villages around it. I will soon make those things happen. Why? Because the people are very stubborn—they refused to listen and obey me.’”


After that happens,’” this message is from the Lord, “‘I will give Zedekiah king of Judah to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I will also give Zedekiah’s officials to Nebuchadnezzar. Some of the people in Jerusalem will not die from the terrible sicknesses. Some of the people will not be killed with swords. Some of them will not die from hunger. But I will give those people to Nebuchadnezzar. I will let Judah’s enemy win. Nebuchadnezzar’s army wants to kill the people of Judah. So the people of Judah and Jerusalem will be killed with swords. Nebuchadnezzar will not show any mercy. He will not feel sorry for those people.’


“Go along the rows of Judah’s grapevines.\par Cut down the vines.\par (But don’t completely destroy them.)\par Cut off all their branches.\par Why? Because they don’t belong to the Lord.\par


The Lord did what he planned to do.\par He has done what he said he would do.\par He has done what he commanded\par from times of long ago.\par He destroyed, and he had no pity.\par He made your enemies happy\par because of what happened to you.\par He made your enemies strong.\par


Young men and old men\par lie on the ground in the streets\par of the city.\par My young women and young men\par have been killed by the sword.\par You, Lord, killed them on the day\par of your anger!\par You killed them without mercy!\par


The Lord has become like an enemy.\par He has swallowed up Israel.\par He has swallowed up all her palaces.\par He has swallowed up all her fortresses.\par He has made much sadness\par and crying for the dead\par in the Daughter of Judah. {\cf2\super [12]} \par


You wrapped yourself with anger.\par You chased us.\par You killed us without mercy!\par


The Lord my Master says, “\{Jerusalem,\} I promise by my life \{that I will punish you\}! I promise that I will punish you! Why? Because you did terrible things to my Holy Place. You did horrible things that made it dirty! I will punish you! I won’t show any mercy. I will not feel sorry for you!

So you should have given the same mercy to that other man that is a servant with you. You should have given him the same mercy that I gave you.’


We fight with weapons that are different from the weapons the world uses. Our weapons have power from God. These weapons can destroy \{the enemy’s\} strong places. We destroy \{people’s\} arguments.


“That nation will surround and attack your cities. You think that the tall, strong walls around your cities will protect you. But those walls will fall down. The enemy will surround all your cities everywhere in the land the Lord your God is giving you.


My anger will burn like a fire, burning down to the deepest grave, [214] burning the earth and all it produces, burning deep down below the mountains!
