Ahaz burned incense {\cf2\super [318]} in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. {\cf2\super [319]} He sacrificed {\cf2\super [320]} his own sons by burning them in the fire. He did the same terrible sins that the peoples living in that land did. The Lord had forced those people out when the people of Israel entered that land.
Manasseh also burned his own children for a sacrifice {\cf2\super [403]} in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. {\cf2\super [404]} Manasseh also used magic by doing soothsaying, divination, and sorcery. {\cf2\super [405]} He talked with mediums {\cf2\super [406]} and wizards. {\cf2\super [407]} Manasseh did many things that the Lord said was wrong, and this made the Lord angry.
You must say these things to those people: ‘Terrible things will happen to you because your ancestors {\cf2\super [131]} quit following me.’ This message is from the Lord. ‘They quit following me and began to follow and serve other gods. They worshiped those other gods. Your ancestors left me and `quit obeying my law.
The Lord said to Moses, “You will die soon. And after you have gone to be with your ancestors, [205] these people will not continue to be faithful to me. They will break the Agreement I made with them. They will leave me and begin worshiping other gods—the false gods of the land where they are going.
Again the people of Israel did things the Lord said are evil. They began worshiping the false gods Baal [93] and the Ashtoreth. [94] They also worshiped the gods of the people of Aram, the gods of the people of Sidon, the gods of the people of Moab, the gods of the people of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistine people. The people of Israel left the Lord and stopped serving him.
That same night the Lord spoke to Gideon. The Lord said, “Take the full-grown bull that belongs to your father, the one that is seven years old. Your father has an altar [58] to the false god Baal. [59] There is also a wooden pole beside the altar. That pole was made to honor the false goddess Asherah. [60] Use the bull to pull down the Baal altar, and cut down the Asherah pole.
Samuel told the people of Israel, “If you are really coming back to the Lord—with all your heart—then you must throw away your foreign gods. You must throw away your idols of Ashtoreth. [83] And you must give yourselves fully to the Lord. You must serve only the Lord! Then the Lord will save you from the Philistines.”
