The people of Israel left the Lord and stopped serving him.

Again the Lord saw the people of Israel doing evil things. So the Lord allowed the Philistine people to rule over them for 40 years.

[59] There is also a wooden pole beside the altar. That pole was made to honor the false goddess Asherah. [60] Use the bull to pull down the Baal altar, and cut down the Asherah pole.

Judges 8:33

As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel again were not faithful to God—they followed Baal. [75] They made Baal Berith [76] their god.

1 Samuel 12:10

But your ancestors cried to the Lord for help. They said, ‘We have sinned. We left the Lord, and we served the false gods Baal [115] and Ashtoreth. [116] But now save us from our enemies, and we will serve you.’
