Hagar walked a short distance away. Then she stopped and sat down. Hagar thought her son would die because there was no water. She did not want to watch him die. She sat there and began to cry.


Every noise scares him.\par His enemy will attack him\par when he thinks he is safe.\par


So Job sat near the garbage piles. He used a piece of broken pottery to scrape his sores.


So, my Master, the Lord All-Powerful, will tell the people to cry and be sad \{for their dead friends\}. People will shave their heads and wear clothes of sadness.


So I say,\par “Don’t look at me!\par Let me cry!\par Don’t rush to comfort me about\par the destruction of Jerusalem.”\par


\{Those women now have\} sweet smelling perfume, but \{at that time, their perfume will become\} moldy and rotten. \{Now they wear\} belts. But \{at that time, they will have only\} ropes to wear. You are guilty of these things so you are like a tall wall with cracks in it. That wall will fall and break into small pieces.


Women, you are calm now, but you should be afraid! Women, you feel safe now, but you should be worried! Take off your nice clothes and put on your clothes of sadness. Wrap those clothes around your waist.


Soldiers came to take things\par from every place in that empty land.\par The Lord used those armies\par to punish that land.\par People from one end of the land\par to the other were punished.\par No person was safe.\par


If you people of Judah don’t listen to the Lord,\par I will hide and cry.\par Your pride will cause me to cry.\par I will cry very hard.\par My eyes will overflow with tears.\par Why? Because the Lord’s flock {\cf2\super [111]} \par will be captured.\par


“Jeremiah, speak this message\par to the people of Judah:\par ‘My eyes are filled with tears.\par I will cry night and day without stopping.\par I will cry for my virgin daughter. {\cf2\super [123]} \par I will cry for my people.\par Why? Because someone hit them\par and crushed them.\par They have been hurt very badly.\par


Many women will lose their husbands.\par There will be more widows\par than there is sand in the sea.\par I will bring a destroyer at noontime.\par The destroyer will attack the mothers\par of the young men of Judah.\par I will bring pain and fear\par on the people of Judah.\par I will make this happen very quickly.\par


Let there be crying in their houses.\par Make them cry when you suddenly\par bring an enemy against them.\par Let all this happen because my enemies\par tried to trap me.\par They hid traps for me to step in.\par


At that time a message will be given\par to the people of Judah and Jerusalem:\par “A hot wind blows from the bare hills.\par It comes from the desert to my people.\par It is not like the gentle wind that farmers use\par to separate the grain from the chaff. {\cf2\super [24]} \par


Disaster follows disaster!\par The whole country is destroyed!\par Suddenly my tents are destroyed!\par My curtains are torn down!\par


So put on sackcloth {\cf2\super [23]} and cry out loud!\par Why? Because the Lord is angry at us.”\par


My people have been hurt very badly.\par The prophets and priests\par should bandage those wounds.\par But they treat those wounds\par like they are only a small scratch.\par They say,\par ‘It is all right, everything is fine!’\par But it is not all right!\par


Listen to my people.\par Everywhere in this country\par people are crying for help.\par They say,\par “Is the Lord still at Zion {\cf2\super [74]} ?\par Is Zion’s King still there?”\par


My people are hurt,\par so I am hurt.\par I am too sad to speak.\par


If my head was filled with water,\par and if my eyes were a fountain of tears,\par I would cry day and night\par for my people that have been destroyed.\par


I (Jeremiah) will cry loud for the mountains.\par I will sing a funeral song\par for the empty fields.\par Why? Because the living things\par were taken away.\par No person travels there now.\par The sounds of cattle can’t be heard there.\par The birds have flown away\par and the animals are gone.\par


“I cry about all these things.\par My eyes, my eyes run down with water.\par There is no comforter near me.\par There is no person that can make me feel better.\par My children are like a wasteland.\par They are like that because the enemy won.”\par


She cries bitterly in the night.\par Her tears are on her cheeks.\par She has no one to comfort her.\par Many nations were friendly to her.\par But none of them comforts her now.\par All of her friends turned their backs on her.\par Her friends became her enemies.\par


My eyes are worn out with tears!\par My insides are upset!\par My heart feels like it has been poured\par on the ground!\par I feel this way because of the destruction\par of my people.\par Children and babies are fainting.\par They are fainting in the public squares\par of the city.\par


The Lord pushed my teeth\par into rocky ground.\par He pushed me into the dirt.\par


My eyes flow with streams of tears!\par I cry because of the destruction\par of my people!\par


At that time, even very nice women\par cooked their own children.\par Those children became food\par for their mothers.\par This happened when my people\par were destroyed.\par


Even a wild dog feeds her babies.\par Even the jackal lets her pups suck\par at her breast.\par But the daughter of my people {\cf2\super [27]} is cruel.\par She is like the ostrich\par that lives in the desert.\par


The sin of the daughter of my people {\cf2\super [28]} \par was very great.\par Their sin was greater than the sins\par of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [29]} \par Sodom and Gomorrah\par were destroyed suddenly.\par No human hand caused that destruction. {\cf2\super [30]} \par


I will change your holidays\par into days of crying for the dead.\par All your songs will be songs of sadness\par for dead people.\par I will put clothes of sadness on everyone.\par I will make every head bald. {\cf2\super [104]} \par I will make it like heavy crying\par for an only son that has died.\par It will be a very bitter end.”\par


The king of Nineveh heard about these things. And the king was also sorry for the bad things he did. So the king left his throne. {\cf2\super [13]} The king removed his robe and put on special clothes \{to show he was sorry\}. Then the king sat in ashes. {\cf2\super [14]}


When Jesus came near the town gates, he saw a funeral. A mother, who was a widow, {\cf2\super [127]} had lost her only son. Many people from the town were there with the mother while her son was being carried out.


Be sad, be sorry, and cry! Change your laughter into crying. Change your joy into sadness.


You rich people, listen! Cry and be very sad because much trouble will come to you.
