In Ahaz’s troubles, he sinned worse and became more unfaithful to the Lord.


But Pharaoh said to them, “Moses and Aaron, you are bothering the workers. Let them do their work! Go mind your own business!


“I punished you people of Judah,\par but it did not help.\par You did not come back when you were punished.\par You killed with your swords the prophets that came to you.\par You were like a dangerous lion and you killed the prophets.”\par


Then Jeremiah answered Pashhur and Zephaniah. He said, “Tell King Zedekiah:


“‘But now, some nations or kingdoms might refuse to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They might refuse to put his yoke {\cf2\super [212]} on their necks. If that happens, this is what I will do: I will punish that nation with sword, hunger, and terrible sickness.’” This message is from the Lord. “I will do that until I destroy that nation. I will use Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the nation that fights against him.


I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, and his leaders to their enemies and to every person that wants to kill them. I will give Zedekiah and his people to the army of the king of Babylon, even though that army has left Jerusalem. {\cf2\super [288]}


Jeremiah, also say this to Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord says: Jehoiakim, you burned that scroll. You said, “Why did Jeremiah write that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land? Why did he say that the king of Babylon will destroy both men and animals in this land?”


(At that time, Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison, so he was free to go anywhere he wanted.


But if you refuse to surrender then Jerusalem will be given to the Babylonian army. They will burn Jerusalem down, and you will not escape from them.’”


And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city of Jerusalem will surely be given to the army of the king of Babylon. He will capture this city.’”


Then those royal officials that heard the things Jeremiah was telling the people went to King Zedekiah. They said to the king, “Jeremiah must be put to death. He is making the soldiers that are still in the city become discouraged. Jeremiah is discouraging everyone by the things he is saying. Jeremiah does not want good to happen to us. He wants to ruin the people of Jerusalem.”


Lord, I know that you want people\par to be loyal to you.\par You hit the people of Judah,\par but they did not feel any pain.\par You destroyed them,\par but they refused to learn their lesson.\par They became very stubborn.\par They refused to be sorry\par for the bad things they did.\par


“My sins were tied up like a yoke.\par My sins were tied up in the Lord’s hands.\par The Lord’s yoke is on my neck.\par The Lord has made me weak.\par The Lord has given me to people\par that I can’t stand up against.\par


But don’t prophesy {\cf2\super [94]} any more here at Bethel! This is Jeroboam’s holy place. This is Israel’s temple!”


They said, “Tell us! What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
