24 \{Those rulers are like plants\};\par they are planted in the ground,\par but before they can send their roots\par into the ground,\par God blows on the “plants,”\par and they become dead and dry,\par and the wind blows them away like straw.\par

Lord, you spoke strongly, a powerful wind blew from your mouth [139] {and the water was pushed back}. We could see the bottom of the sea. We could see the earth’s foundations.


So Jehu killed all the people in Ahab’s family living in Jezreel. Jehu killed all the important men, close friends, and priests. None of Ahab’s people were left alive.


Does God blow the evil people away,\par like the wind blows straw,\par like strong winds blow the grain husks?\par


God’s punishment kills those people.\par God’s anger destroys them.\par


It wraps its roots around a pile of rocks,\par looking for a place to grow in the rocks.\par


May they be destroyed quickly like thorns\par that burn too fast to heat the pot.\par


Make those people like a tumbleweed {\cf2\super [480]} \par blown by the wind.\par Scatter those people\par like the wind scatters straw.\par


Great trouble will come to you like a bad storm. Problems will hit you like a strong wind. Your troubles and sadness will be a very great burden on you.


You will plant your grapevines one day and try to make them grow. The next day the plants will begin to grow. But at harvest time, you will go to gather the fruit from the plants, and you will see that everything is dead. A sickness will kill all the plants.


\{And the people will be like those waves—\}\par God will speak harshly to the people,\par and they will run away.\par The people will be like chaff {\cf2\super [181]} \par being chased by the wind.\par The people will be like tumbleweeds {\cf2\super [182]} \par being chased by a storm.\par The wind blows and the weeds go far away.\par


Topheth {\cf2\super [287]} has been made ready for a long time. It is ready for the king. {\cf2\super [288]} It was made very deep and wide. There is a very big pile of wood and fire there. And the Lord’s breath (Spirit) will come like a stream of burning sulfur and burn it.


Look, I will send a spirit against Assyria. \{The king of\} Assyria will get a report warning him about a danger to his country. So, he will go back to his country. At that time, I will kill him with a sword in his own country.’”


A powerful wind from the Lord\par blows on the grass,\par and the grass dies\par and the wildflower falls.”\par


You will throw them into the air,\par and the wind will blow them away\par and scatter them.\par Then you will be happy in the Lord.\par You will be very proud of the Holy One (God) of Israel.”\par


\{Tell me the answers to these questions:\}\par Who woke the man \{that is coming\}\par from the east?\par Goodness walks with him.\par He uses his sword \{and defeats nations\}—\par they become like dust.\par He uses his bow and conquers kings—\par they run away like straw blown\par by the wind.\par


The Lord says,\par “Write this down about Jehoiachin:\par ‘He is a man that has no children anymore!\par Jehoiachin will not be successful\par in his lifetime.\par And none of his children\par will sit on the throne of David.\par None of his children\par will rule in Judah.’”\par


Now the punishment from the Lord\par will come like a storm.\par The Lord’s anger will be like a tornado.\par It will come crashing down\par on the heads of those wicked people.\par


\{Israel\} grows among his brothers.\par But a powerful east wind will come—\par the Lord’s wind will blow from the desert.\par Then \{Israel’s\} well will become dry.\par His spring of water will become dry.\par The wind will take every valuable thing\par from \{Israel’s\} treasure.\par


That is why those people will soon disappear. They will be like the fog that comes early in the morning—that fog comes and then soon disappears. The Israelites will be like chaff {\cf2\super [144]} that is blown from the threshing floor. {\cf2\super [145]} The Israelites will be like smoke that rises from a chimney and disappears.


\{King of Assyria,\}\par the Lord gave this command about you:\par “You will not have any descendants\par to wear your name.\par I will destroy your carved idols\par and metal statues that are in the temple\par of your gods.\par I am preparing your grave for you\par because your end is coming soon! {\cf2\super [4]} \par


The Lord All-Powerful says, “You people look for a big harvest. But when you go to gather the crop, there is only a little grain. So you bring that grain home. And then I \{send a wind that\} blows it all away! Why are these things happening? Why? Because my house is still in ruins while each of you runs home to take care of his own house.


I will bring the other nations against them\par like a storm.\par They didn’t know those nations,\par but the country will be destroyed\par after those nations pass through.\par This pleasant country will be destroyed.”\par


The Lord will appear to them,\par and he will shoot his arrows like lightning.\par The Lord my Master will blow the trumpet,\par and the army will rush forward\par like a desert dust storm.\par
