13 My Master says, “These people say they love me. They show honor to me with words from their mouths. But their hearts are far from me. The honor they show me is nothing but human rules they have memorized.

Lord, hear my prayer for fairness.\par I am calling loudly to you.\par And I am being honest in the things I say.\par So, please listen to my prayer.\par


God says to wicked people,\par “You people talk about my laws.\par You talk about my Agreement.\par


So, don’t try to change the things God says. If you do, he will punish you and prove that you tell lies.


I will send Assyria to fight against the people that do evil things. I am angry at those people, and I will command Assyria to fight against them. Assyria will defeat them and Assyria will take their wealth from them. Israel will become like dirt for Assyria to trample (walk on) in the streets.


\{God says,\} “Look at Ariel! {\cf2\super [265]} Ariel, the city where David camped. Her holidays have continued year after year.


Or you can give the book to a person that can’t read, and tell that person to read the book. That person will say, “I can’t read the book because I don’t know how to read.”


Stop seeing things that will really happen! Get out of our way! Stop telling us about the Holy One of Israel.”


So the Lord became angry at them. The Lord caused powerful wars against them. It was like the people of Israel had fire all around them. But they did not know what was happening. It was like they were burning. But they did not try to understand the things that were happening.


Lord, why are you pushing us\par away from you?\par Why are you making it hard\par for us to follow you?\par Come back to us Lord!\par We are your servants.\par Come to us and help us!\par Our families belong to you.\par


You have put those wicked people here.\par They are like plants with strong roots,\par they grow and produce fruit.\par With their mouths, they say that you are near and dear to them.\par But in their hearts, they are really far away from you.\par


Israel’s unfaithful sister (Judah) did not come back to me with her whole heart. She only pretended that she came back to me.” This message was from the Lord.


The people make promises and say, ‘As the Lord lives.’ But they don’t really mean it.”


Some of the elders of Israel came to me. They sat down to talk with me.


“‘And now, about you, Son of man. {\cf2\super [273]} Your people lean against the walls and stand in their doorways talking about you. They tell each other, “Come on, let’s go hear what the Lord says.”


They never call to me from their hearts.\par Yes, they cry on their beds.\par And they cut themselves\par when they ask for grain and\par new wine.\par But \{in their hearts,\} they have turned away\par from me.\par


These rules are talking about earthly things that are gone after they are used. These rules are only commands and teachings from people, \{not God\}.


Saul answered, “All right, I sinned! But please come back with me. Show me some respect in front of the leaders and the people of Israel. Come back with me so I may worship the Lord your God.”
