People still ask for wine in the market places. But all the happiness is gone. Joy has been carried far away.


You women feel safe now, but after one year you will be troubled. \{Why?\} Because you will not gather grapes next year—there will be no grapes to gather.


Joy and happiness are gone\par from the large vineyards {\cf2\super [386]} of Moab.\par I stopped the flow of wine\par from the winepresses. {\cf2\super [387]} \par There is no singing and dancing\par from people walking on the grapes\par to make wine.\par There are no shouts of joy.\par


You people living in Israel, do you hear the whistle? The enemy is coming. That time of punishment is coming very soon! The noise of the enemy is getting louder and louder on the mountains.


The vines have become dry.\par And the fig tree is dying.\par All the trees in the field—the pomegranate,\par the palm, and the apple—have withered.\par And happiness among the people is dead.\par


You take unfair taxes {\cf2\super [69]} from poor people.\par You take loads of wheat from them.\par You build fancy houses with cut stone.\par But you will not live in those houses.\par You plant beautiful fields of grapes.\par But you will not drink the wine from them.\par


People will be crying in the fields of grapes.\par Why? Because I will pass through\par \{and punish\} you.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


The Lord says,\par “The time is coming when\par the person plowing the field,\par will catch up with the person\par harvesting the crops.\par The person that walks on the grapes,\par will catch up with the person\par that pulls the grapes from the plants.\par The sweet wine will pour\par from the hills and mountains.\par


Then other people will take their wealth and destroy their houses. At that time, people that built houses will not live in them and people that planted fields of grapes will not drink the wine from those grapes—\{other people will get those things\}.”


One day the people of Shechem went out to the fields to pick grapes. The people squeezed the grapes to make wine. And then they had a party at the temple of their god. The people ate and drank and said bad things about Abimelech.
