16 \{Assyria {\cf2\super [119]} thinks he is great.\} But the Lord All-Powerful will send a terrible disease against Assyria. Assyria will lose his wealth and power like a sick man loses weight. Then Assyria’s glory will be destroyed. It will be like a fire burning until everything is gone.
16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
16 Therefore will the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send leanness among [the Assyrian's] fat ones; and instead of his glory or under it He will kindle a burning like the burning of fire.
16 Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.
16 Therefore, the LORD God of heavenly forces will make the well-fed people waste away; and among his officials, a blaze will burn like scorching fire.
16 Because of this, the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send leanness among his fat ones. And under the influence of his glory, a burning ardor will rage, like a consuming fire.
16 Therefore the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall send leanness among his fat ones: and under his glory shall be kindled a burning, as it were the burning of a fire.
Then the Lord sent an angel to the king of Assyria’s camp. That angel killed all the soldiers and the leaders and the officers in the Assyrian army. So the king of Assyria went back home to his own country, and his people were ashamed of him. He went into the temple of his god and some of his own sons killed him there with a sword.
Then the fire grows and burns away the great trees and vineyards. {\cf2\super [120]} Finally, everything is destroyed—even the people. \{It will be like that when God destroys Assyria.\} Assyria will be like a rotting log.
But Lord, get ready to punish those people.\par Surely they will see it, won’t they?\par Lord, show the evil people the strong love {\cf2\super [241]} \par that you have for your people.\par Surely the evil people will be ashamed.\par Surely your enemies will be burned\par in their own fire (evil).\par
Yes, you were upset at me.\par I heard your proud insults.\par So I will put my hook in your nose.\par And I will put my bit {\cf2\super [356]} in your mouth.\par Then I will turn you around\par and lead you back the way you came.’”\par
\{That night,\} the angel of the Lord went out and killed 185,000 people in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up in the morning, they saw the dead bodies all around them.
\{God will make the people of Israel leave their country; the land will be empty.\} Sheep will go any place they want. Lambs will walk on the land that rich people once owned.
But I, the Lord, will bring the king of Assyria and all his power against you. They will come like a powerful flood of water from the Euphrates River. It will be like water rising up and over the river banks.
Why? Because you will take away the heavy burden. You will take away the heavy pole on the people’s backs. You will take away the rod that the enemy uses to punish your people. This will be like the time you defeated Midian. {\cf2\super [107]}
“I will search for the lost sheep. I will bring back the sheep that were scattered. I will put bandages on the sheep that were hurt. I will make the weak sheep strong. But I will destroy those fat and powerful \{shepherds\}. I will feed them the punishment they deserve.”
The Lord said these things \{to Judah\}:\par “The people of Assyria are at full strength.\par They have many soldiers.\par But they will all be cut down.\par They will all be finished.\par My people, I made you suffer.\par But I will make you suffer no more.\par
Herod \{accepted this praise and\} did not give the glory to God. So an angel of the Lord caused him to become sick. He was eaten by worms inside him, and he died.
