The king of Aram defeated Jehoahaz’s army. The king of Aram destroyed most of the men in the army. He left only 50 horse soldiers, 10 chariots, [150] and 10,000 foot soldiers. Jehoahaz’s soldiers were like chaff [151] blown away by the wind at the time of threshing. [152]


God changed the fertile land\par and it became worthless salty land.\par Why? Because of the bad people\par who were living in that place.\par


Weeds were growing everywhere in those fields. Worthless plants were growing on the ground. And the wall around the fields was broken and falling down.


At that time, my Master (God) will again reach out and take his people that are left. This will be the second time God has done this. \{(These are God’s people that are left in countries like Assyria, North Egypt, South Egypt, Ethiopia, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath, and all the faraway countries around the world.)


The leaders of Zoan have been fooled. The leaders of Noph have believed false things. So the leaders lead Egypt the wrong way.


At that time, the Lord will begin separating his people from others. He will begin at the Euphrates River. {\cf2\super [253]} The Lord will gather all his people from the Euphrates River to the River of Egypt. {\cf2\super [254]}


Cry for the land of my people. Cry because only thorns and weeds will grow there. Cry for the city and for all the houses that were once filled with joy.


Thorns and wild bushes will grow in all the beautiful homes there. Wild dogs and owls will live in those homes. Wild animals will make their homes there. Big birds will live in the grasses that grow there.


I will make my vineyard {\cf2\super [47]} an empty field.\par No person will care for the plants.\par No person will work in the field.\par Weeds and thorns will grow there.\par I will command the clouds\par not to rain on the field.”\par


In this land, there are now fields that have 1,000 grapevines. Each grapevine is worth 1,000 pieces of silver. But these fields will become full of weeds and thorns.


People from Memphis and Tahpanhes {\cf2\super [9]} \par have smashed the top of your head.\par


Jeremiah received a message from the Lord. This message was for all the people of Judah living in Egypt. The message was for the people of Judah living in the towns of Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and southern Egypt. This was the message:


There were a few survivors {\cf2\super [356]} from Judah. Those people came here to Egypt. But I will destroy those few survivors from the family of Judah. They will be killed with swords or die from hunger. They will be something that people of other nations will speak evil about. Other nations will be afraid at what happened to those people. Those people will become a curse word. Other nations will insult those people of Judah.


I will punish those people that have gone to live in Egypt. I will use swords, hunger, and terrible sicknesses to punish them. I will punish those people just like I punished the city of Jerusalem.


“Announce this message in Egypt.\par Tell it in the city of Migdol.\par Tell it in Memphis and Tahpanhes.\par ‘Get ready for war.\par Why? Because people all around you\par are being killed with swords.’\par


People of Egypt, pack your things.\par Get ready for captivity.\par Why? Because Memphis will be\par a ruined, empty land.\par Those cities will be destroyed,\par and no person will live there.\par


The Lord my Master says these things:\par “I will also destroy the idols {\cf2\super [247]} in Egypt.\par I will take the statues away from Memphis.\par There won’t be a leader anymore\par in the land of Egypt,\par And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.\par


I will start a fire in Egypt;\par The city named Sin will ache with fear.\par The soldiers will break into the city No,\par and Memphis will have new troubles\par every day.\par


Israel sinned and built many high places. {\cf2\super [104]} The high places of Aven {\cf2\super [105]} will be destroyed. Thorns and weeds will grow on their altars. {\cf2\super [106]} Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”


They will come from Egypt\par shaking like birds.\par They will come shaking like doves\par from the land of Assyria.\par And I will take them back home.”\par The Lord said that.\par


“So, I (the Lord) will block your \{(Israel’s) road with thorns. I will build a wall. Then she will not be able to find her paths.


So Ephraim has become like a silly dove without understanding.\par The people called to Egypt for help.\par The people went to Assyria for help.\par


It will be bad for them.\par They left me.\par They refused to obey me.\par So they will be destroyed.\par I saved those people.\par But they speak lies against me.\par


But they were like a boomerang. {\cf2\super [74]} \par They changed directions,\par but they did not come back to me. {\cf2\super [75]} \par Their leaders bragged \{about their strength\}.\par But they will be killed with swords.\par And the people in Egypt will laugh at them.\par


The Israelites love sacrifices. {\cf2\super [82]} \par They offer the meat and eat it.\par The Lord does not accept their sacrifices.\par He remembers their sins.\par And he will punish them.\par They will be carried as prisoners to Egypt.\par


The Israelites will not stay in the Lord’s land. Ephraim will return to Egypt. In Assyria they will eat food that they should not eat.


I will scatter you among the nations. I will pull out my sword and destroy you. Your land will become empty and your cities will be destroyed.


You people living in the lower part of town will cry. Why? Because all the businessmen and rich merchants will be destroyed.


The Israelites saw that they were in trouble. They felt trapped. They ran away to hide in caves and cracks in the rock. They hid among the rocks, in wells, and in other holes in the ground.
