It was not enough for Ahab to do the same sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had done. So Ahab also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal. Ethbaal was the king of the people of Sidon. Then Ahab began to serve and worship Baal. [190]


Then our ancestors {\cf2\super [555]} believed God.\par They sang praises to him.\par


I have had many enemies all my life.\par


Then Sharon Valley {\cf2\super [470]} will be a field for sheep. The Valley of Achor {\cf2\super [471]} will be a place for cattle to rest. All these things will be for my people—the people that look for me.


“In that city, if a person builds a house,\par that person will live there.\par If a person plants a garden of grapes,\par that person will eat the grapes\par from that garden.\par


The Lord’s message came to Jeremiah. This message was from the Lord:


“Jeremiah, go and speak to the people of Jerusalem. Say to them:


I say this because I know the plans that I have for you.” This message is from the Lord. “I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future.


But now you are calling me, ‘Father.’\par You said,\par ‘You have been my friend\par since I was a child.’\par


The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: ‘In the future, my people will once again buy houses, fields, and vineyards in the land of Israel.’”


But then I think of something else,\par then I have hope. What I think of is this:\par


You left me and did all those terrible things. And you never remembered the time when you were young. You did not remember that you were naked and kicking in blood \{when I found you\}.


I looked you over. I saw you were ready for love. So I spread my clothes over you {\cf2\super [118]} and covered your nakedness. I promised to marry you. I made the agreement {\cf2\super [119]} with you. And you became mine.’” The Lord my Master said these things.


The Lord my Master said these things, “I scattered the people of Israel among other nations. But I will gather the family of Israel together again. Then those nations will know that I am holy and they will treat me that way. At that time, the people of Israel will live in their land—I gave that land to my servant Jacob.


They will live safely in the land. They will build houses and plant vineyards. I will punish the nations around them that hated them. Then the people of Israel will live in safety. And they will know that I am the Lord their God.”


\{The Lord said,\}“I loved Israel when he was a child,\par and I called my son out of Egypt.\par


But the Lord used a prophet and brought Israel out of Egypt. The Lord used a prophet and kept Israel safe.


“But I have been the Lord your God since \{the time you were in\} the land of Egypt. I will make you live in tents—like during the time of the Tent of Meeting. {\cf2\super [136]}


“I have been the Lord your God since the time you were in the land of Egypt. You did not know any other god except me. I am the One who saved you.


I will destroy her vines and fig trees. She said, ‘My lovers gave these things to me.’ But I will change her gardens—they will become like a wild forest. Wild animals will come and eat from those plants.


I will bring my people, Israel,\par back from captivity.\par They will build the ruined cities again.\par And they will live in those cities.\par They will plant fields of grapes,\par and drink the wine they produce.\par They will plant gardens,\par and eat the crops they produce.\par


Prisoners, go home!\par Now you have something to hope for.\par I am telling you now,\par I am coming back to you!\par


Then the people of Israel sang this song:


I am the gate. The person that enters through me will be saved. That person will be able to come in and go out. He will find everything he needs.


When Paul and Barnabas arrived, they gathered the church (group of believers) together. Paul and Barnabas told them about all the things God had done with them. They said, “God opened a door so that the people of other nations (non-Jews) could also believe!”


After they burned Achan, they put many rocks over his body. Those rocks are still there today. {So God brought trouble to Achan.} That is why that place is called the Valley of Achor. [38] After this the Lord was not angry with the people.


The people of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, even though the Lord had saved them from all their enemies that were living all around the people of Israel.
