Hebrews 7:5 - Easy To Read Version

5 Now the law says that people in the family group {\cf2\super [60]} of Levi who become priests must get one-tenth from the people. The priests collect it from their own people (the Jews), even though the priests and their people are both from the family of Abraham.

The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants [248] that went with him to Egypt was 66 people. (The wives of Jacob’s sons were not counted in this number.)


But you are not the one that I have chosen to build the temple. Your son will build my temple!’


I also heard that the people had not given the Levites their share. So the Levites and singers had gone back to work in their own fields.


There was a total of 70 people who were direct descendants [1] of Jacob. (Joseph was one of the twelve sons, but he was already in Egypt.)


{The Lord said to Moses,} “Tell your brother Aaron and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, to come to you from the people of Israel. These men will serve me as priests.


But, Aaron, only you and your sons may serve as priests. You are the only ones that can go near the altar. You are the only ones that can go inside the curtain {into the Most Holy Place}. I am giving you a gift—your service as a priest. Anyone else that comes near {my} holy place must be killed.”


“Every third year is the Year of Tithes. In that year, you must give one tenth of your harvest to the Levites, [161] to the foreigners living in your country, and to the widows [162] and orphans. [163] Then those people will have plenty to eat in every city.


To be a high priest {\cf2\super [38]} is an honor. But no person chooses himself for this work. That person must be called by God like Aaron {\cf2\super [39]} was.


Levi was not yet born. But Levi was in the body of his ancestor Abraham when Melchizedek met Abraham.
