You don’t really want sacrifices. {\cf2\super [305]} \par So why should I give sacrifices\par that you don’t even want!\par

Some people kill bulls \{as a sacrifice\},\par but they also beat people.\par Those people kill sheep as a sacrifice,\par but they also break the necks of dogs!\par Those people offer up grain offerings,\par but they also offer the blood of pigs! {\cf2\super [475]} \par Those people burn incense, {\cf2\super [476]} \par but they also love their worthless idols. {\cf2\super [477]} \par Those people choose their own ways.\par And they also love their terrible idols.\par

\{The Lord says,\}\par “Why do you bring me incense {\cf2\super [43]} \par from the country of Sheba? {\cf2\super [44]} \par Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a far away country?\par Your burnt offerings don’t make\par me happy.\par Your sacrifices don’t please me.”\par

Think about the things you will say. And come back to the Lord. Say to him,

Why? Because I want faithful love,\par not sacrifice,\par \{I want people\} to know God,\par not \{to bring\} burnt offerings.\par

And a person must love God with all his heart, all his mind, and all his strength. And a person must love other people the same as he loves himself. These commands are more important than all the animals and sacrifices we offer to God.”

And I will make this agreement with\par those people\par when I take away their sins.”\par \i (Isaiah 59:20-21; 27:9)\i0 \par

The law {\cf2\super [119]} gave us only an unclear picture of the good things coming in the future. The law is not a perfect picture of the real things. The law tells people to offer the same sacrifices {\cf2\super [120]} every year. The people who come to worship God continue to offer those sacrifices. But the law can never make those people perfect.

Every day the priests stand and do their religious service. Again and again the priests offer the same sacrifices. {\cf2\super [127]} But those sacrifices can never take away sins.

\{In this Scripture {\cf2\super [123]} \} he (Christ) first said, “You don’t want sacrifices {\cf2\super [124]} and offerings. You are not pleased with animals killed and burned or with sacrifices to take away sin.” (These are all sacrifices that the law {\cf2\super [125]} commands.)

This is an example for us today. This shows that the gifts and sacrifices {\cf2\super [103]} that were offered to God were not able to fully cleanse the person who was worshiping God. Those sacrifices could not make that person perfect in his heart.

You know that Christ came to take away people’s sins. There is no sin in Christ.
